If I was caught in possession of a hand gun, I’d possibly end up doing time. The police aren’t routinely armed here, never mind the general public.

My carries switch between a Ruger SR40c (.40 cal obvious) but it’s a bit too large to conceal carry. For concealed it’s a Taurus .38 special snubnose revolver.

I don't carry because I work at a gun free zone-a military base, go figure. I know that I support concealed carry, and those that do carry reduce crime. John Lott proved that in his book, "more guns, Less crime". Many people can't see how guns make you safer, because we have been conditioned to think of guns as bad. Fact is, 99.9% of mass shooting happen in "gun free" zones. Gun free zones just disarm the good guys, criminals don't care.

The Ortgies 7.65 mm pistol was a hammerless semi-automatic pistol produced in Germany in the years immediately after World War I (1919-1924), first by its inventor Heinrich Ortgies and then by Deutsche Werke . Inexpensive, but of good quality, the pistol achieved considerable success at contemporary shooting competitions and, as an export product, was popular in North, Central, and South America.

It’s a rather unique gun. It has no screws, a backstrap safety, and the magazine can accommodate both .32ACP and .380ACP. If I could find a .380 barrel for it, I could swap between ammo types in under 15 minutes. When you take the slide off, the barrel cam-locks into the frame - twist 90 degrees counter-clockwise to remove, and reverse to reinstall.

Went through it in my head 100 times. “What would happen if?”

It was textbook. The guy walked in 30-60 seconds behind me before I could lock the door and caught me off guard and sleepy at 4am.

There was lots of yelling, lots of attempts to get the safe open. I acted like the biggest pussy you could imagine. Soft, clear sentences, no sudden movements, etc... I gave him everything - even asked him if he wanted the $2-300 in rolled coins too. Put it all in a bag and handed it to him..

And that’s as far as my “What would happen if” scenarios ever went. I never thought about what would happen next.

And that’s when I started to panic.

Robber: “grab the keys”

Me: (looks at floor with my hands out palms down - my new default stance that morning) “Which keys?”

R: “The keys to these doors out there (sheds/refrigerators)”

M: (relieved) “Which one do you want me to open?”

He points to large one and tells me to get in it. I unlock it, drop the keys, get inside, and he slammed it shut and put the padlock on it.

It was a dry storage shed that was an outdoor refrigerator without a refrigeration unit. I didn’t have my cell phone (it was 1996ish, so I kept it in the car), but I wasnt’ too worried, since the doors to that shed could be opened from the inside, even if locked.

I was out a minute (ok, maybe 4-5) later, and inside on the phone to my business partner, telling him to haul ass to another one of our stores to get me some fucking cash so I can get the store open.

Then I locked the back door.

Then I called 911

I was soooooo pissed.

The more compact the gun the more comfortable it is to carry daily. Any bigger and simply becomes a pain to carry it IMO (and then you dont want to do it).

How do you like it? I’ve carried a Cz.82 for a while and I love it but it’s too big and thick. I’m looking for something smaller and I’ve narrowed it down to a Ruger LC9s or a S&W M&P Shield 9mm. Cost isn’t an issue, but I do like that the S&W comes with an extra mag. I also have an M&P 40 full frame and love it, so I’m familiar with the platform, which is a small plus. I could figure the Ruger out pretty quick I’m sure. The only thing I like about the LC9s is that it’s a bit smaller and several ounces lighter.

I picked it up on WisconsinSurplus.com - it was a firearm confiscated by the WI DNR. Including license and auction fees, it cost me around $187. They shipped it to my local FFL dealer, and I did the paperwork there. Over the weekend, I dropped $35 on a reproduction magazine for it so I’ll have two.

In the same auction, I picked up a Harrington & Richardson 251 Sportster from 1952. .22LR bolt-action. With fees, it was about $110.

Just give him whatever he wants. He got the jump on you. Even if I was armed I woudln’t have been able to do anything. Dude had a mask and aside from race/height/weight, there was nothing to identify him.

After that, we put a fence with a lockable gate at the end of our covered back porch. We had a motion sensor there previously, but I didn’t think anything about it when it went off that morning. We had several stores, and managers sometimes stopped in on their way into their store if they needed something. Sometimes it was even trash, or a bird that tripped it off.

After that day, whenever that buzzer went off, I moved into my battle station. It was a space partly obscured but within site of the door, hand on grip, waiting to see who came in.

It was always an employee or another manager, but from where I was standing, it was very easy for me to smile and send a “Hey, what’s up” downrange instead.

No one in my stores knew I carried except for my business partner. I prefered it that way.

Nice looking, but appears to be ridiculously heavy for carry. I’ve had a concealed carry permit for going on 7 years now, but I think I’ve only carried 3 or 4 times ever. Getting one in AZ is cheap as chips, so I had done it for the class mostly. Now you don’t even need a permit at all in AZ to carry concealed.

Interesting story though - having a CCW in AZ allows you to bypass any background checks. Show it when you are purchasing and you can be out the door in 10 minutes if you want. This does not hold true if you are a police officer though. Law enforcement officers still have to go through the background check. Found this out one day when there was a cop there purchasing a new backup carry piece. She had to wait for the checks in order to get it. This seems ludicrous to me.

Do you know if the guy was ever caught?

Not for my robbery. He had gloves and a mask on, and was in and out in less than five minutes. No idea if he was on foot, had a car, what direction he went.

From the time he left, it was probably five minutes before I completed the 911 call. “Black male, 5’-7” 140lbs ski mask, last seen carrying a bag of loot” isn’t much to go on after 5 minutes at 4am.

He could be in jail now for all I know. That wasn’t his first (or probably his last) robbery.

The funny thing was how quickly people found out about it.

I was able to get the store open in time, and while I wasn’t as far ahead with production, I had enough product and there was no visible clues that I even got a late start.

Within 10 minutes of being open (at 7AM) customers would make comments like, “Hey, I understand you had some excitement here this morning” or “Was it you that was here this morning, are you OK?”

Here I am hustling, probably still filled with adrenalin from the robbery and trying to get caught up... Just as I was starting to get my rythem back people are asking me about it.

I think I was most worried about parents making their kids quit, or not allowing them to work morning shifts or after dark. I just wanted it to go away and not become news.

Current carry piece. Cz.82 in 9x18mm Makarov. Has 12 rd. double stack mags, SA/DA trigger, and ambidextrous safety and magazine release. It came with the factory CZ “coating”, i.e. enamel paint (still visible on the magazine floor plate), which I removed and I blued the gun myself in my kitchen sink. I also polished the extractor and barrel for some contrast, and got a set of custom made grips from Marschal in Hungary. Dark walnut with checking and finger grooves, old school CZ logo, and a thumb rest on the opposite side.

However, this gun is big and heavy, and the thumb rest on the awesome target grips really digs into my side. I’m in the market for a new gun, single stack, 9x19mm. Looking currently at the Ruger LC9s or M&P Shield.

I’ve got both the M&P Shield 9mm and the LC9. I like them both, pretty comfortable and accurate. The LC9 is a little smaller and fits in pockets better, but they both fit in the same belt holster that I use and are easily covered by an untucked shirt. I’ve only put a couple hundred rounds through them, so no word on durability yet. I honestly couldn’t tell you which one I like better, probably the shield because it’s “mine” with the LC9 being “hers”, but I don’t have any real reasons to pick one over the other. The LC9 is a bit cheaper though.

Completely 100% reliable right out of the box. Fits nice in my hands, which are on the small side. It is accurate for the size. The trigger is good for a CCW. It is actually a bit sharper than the m&p 9 I have, although heavier. I run the small mag at all times with the long mag as extra.

Price is right around 350-380 if you shop around. I feel bad for G43 owners spending $500+ on a pistol that has one less round count and was late to the game lol.

I did not like the lc9 trigger when it came out, but I think it has been improved.

If you want to point to evidence suggesting a link between gun ownership and lower crime rates, I’d suggest you look to work with better econometrics and sampling. Besides, “More Guns” is 20 years out of date, now.

LC9 is cheaper but only comes with 1 magazine :( I look at it that if I’m carrying, I may potentially have to trust my life to this gun one day, so I won’t quibble over a few bucks. I just want to find what’s best for me.

You’re pretty much echoing my thoughts, which is no help!!! Kidding. I’ve held both, plus a Glock 43, but not shot any of them. I’m not a “Glock guy” but was surprised at how much I liked the 43. I just don’t like that it’s more expensive, you have to buy grip extensions, 1 less capacity, and no safety. I almost bought an LC9s this past weekend but still didn’t feel 100% sure, so I went home and started researching more and kept coming around to the Shield again.

I was originally thinking of a true pocket gun - was interested in an LCP380 or maybe even the Taurus Curve. But both are too non-standard for me (no slide lockback, last round hold open, weird fiddly magazine release, etc). Then I found out about the S&W Bodyguard, so that may still be a contender, but I feel like I’d rather get the LC9. Not much bigger and in 9mm, it’s got some oomph over the 380 and 1 more round capacity. But then I look at that and consider the Shield. Pretty soon I’ll have talked myself up into a double-stack 1911. Ugh.

Thanks for the info. I had originally been thinking a true pocket gun, like an LCP380 or Taurus Curve but I decided you get a whole lot more with an M&P or LC9s and they aren’t much more both in terms of size and cost. The Bodyguard in 380 is still interesting to me, but I feel like the LC9s isn’t much bigger and offers a lot more. But then the M&P is only a hair bigger than the LC9s and it’s a platform I already know well. Ugh, eventually I’ll have myself talked up to a double stack 45. Haha.

I tried the G43 and surprisingly liked how it felt, I’m not normally a “Glock guy.” But you’re right, it’s a lot more money and no better and some cases worse than the Ruger or the S&W.

The original LC9 had an internal hammer, and everyone bitched about the trigger. So it was redesigned last year as the LC9s which is striker fired. Apparently it’s a huge improvement. There’s also some aftermarket bits out there that further improve on it, though the same goes for the M&P.

The fact that military personnel aren’t allowed to carry is sheer idiocy which has been proven too many times in recent history. We trust you guys to defend us from the world, I can’t get my head around why you aren’t allowed to defend yourselves at home or on base.

Thanks for serving.

Well hopefully he’s doing time for something, because that’s pretty screwed up.

My dad got attacked by a crazy person in a parking lot one night, completely unprovoked. The guy just came out of nowhere, with a bread knife of all things. We had been out to dinner and he was going to get something from the car while I walked to a store in the same shopping plaza with my mom and sister. When it went down I ran over and was about to stab the guy with my pocket knife when he suddenly backed off. He looked at us for a minute, put his knife in his waistband and casually walked away like nothing happened. I called 911 and the police came and got the guy - he walked 30 yards across the empty parking lot and just stood there. He’s now in a psychiatric hospital where it sounds like he’s going to be the rest of his life.

So not quite as intense as your story, but definitely a rush. It’s one of those things that I don’t mind talking about now, but at the time I just wanted it to all blow over and didn’t want any media attention or anything.

For the price of ammo and overall lacking performance, the .380 round is absolutely not the way to go.

Luckily, the pocket gun market has expanded greatly in 9mm offerings. Now is the time to take advantage. 9mm is easy on recoil and with advancements in bullet design/loads... it is simply an “all rounder”. Even in medium to full size pistols, just by sheer round count alone in a double stack mag... it cant be beat.

You’re heading in the right direction.

I thought I had 2 mags for the LC9, but it’s been a while since I shot it, so maybe I’m wrong. I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with either. Maybe pick one or both up used and then you don’t really have to decide. Also, the 2nd mag that comes with the shield is a 7 rounder without the spot for your pinky, if that matters to you.

Edit: I do have 2 for the LC9, I bought the 2nd one separately.

100% agreed. I have pistols in almost everything from .22 to .45 (except a .380) and I think 9mm is my favorite. My current carry is a 9x18 Makarov which is a snappy little round, kind of between an .380 and 9mm in performance, but there’s not really any good defense loads for it. The pistol is also too big, hence my move, down and up, towards a 9mm subcompact.

I think I need to find someone, or somewhere, I can shoot an LC9s and Shield side by side.

Thanks, I appreciate all the info. There are a few ranges around here that rent, I’m looking to see if anyone has both so I can compare them side by side. I suppose I could buy both, but I’d rather put the gun budget money towards other stuff. But then again, that’s 2 more in the safe. Hmm...

It’s crazy how real some of them are built too. I had a gas blowback 1911 that breaks down identically to my Dad’s actual 1911 aside from the firing pin and clip.

Countries with stricter gun laws have much, much, much less crime than the US. The problem is that, here, there are already so many guns out there that if we adopted the same policies, things wouldn’t change much if at all.

I don’t carry because I’m not paranoid.

It’s really scary how many people truly believe that they’re going to be gunned down for no reason. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy since it only means there are more people out there with an itchy trigger finger. I’m not saying you’re like that, but still.

I wished I could have been, but got orders dropped to Okinawa, this was from ANGLICO...the MP7 was Doc’s. I was happy when we ditched the hand-me-down M4’s and Sigs from NSW Virginia Beach. Their stuff was without a doubt badass, but it was a little too “special edition” for me.

Not sure how you’ve grown up, but it was a common occurrence where I grew up to be attacked, car jacked jumped by a group. I always carried something. Whether that be a knife, machete, or gun. Home invasions from people with and without guns. I prefer not to get in a brawl with just my fists.

I mean, if you’re in an area like that, by all means keep yourself safe. I don’t live in a doors-unlocked-all-the-time area or anything, and there actually has been a shooting in my subdivision, (one shot fired through a bedroom window after a fight over who knows what, luckily didn’t hit anyone) but it’s certainly not that dangerous around here. I think most places are safer than they seem, really.

Did we do the same search? Here’s a somewhat scuzzy one with non-original grips and no mag for $210 buy-it-now.

Here’s another grungy one with a mag and non-original grips for $175 open auction.

I normally just search “Ortgies” because it was made by two different manufacturers and even I misspell “Deutsche” as “Deutche”.
